Veneers FAQ – All your questions answered
There’s a million things out there that you could read about when it comes to veneers. Don’t even get me started about the MYTHS that are generated by those influenced by prehistoric views and lack of dental knowledge. Never fear! That is why we, at Vogue Dental Studios, are here, at your service.
Let’s begin by firstly establishing what the differences are between PORCELAIN and COMPOSITE veneers.
|What are Porcelain Veneers?||What are Composite Veneers?|
|+ Porcelain Veneers are made of ultra-thin ceramic porcelain that is permanently bonded to your tooth enamel. They are specifically hand-crafted by a highly skilled lab technician and is therefore made outside the mouth.
+ Lifespan is 15+ years.
|+ Composite Veneers (also known as bonded veneers, direct veneers, chair side veneers or resin) are specifically crafted and bonded to your tooth enamel by a cosmetic dentist. Yes, it is made in your mouth.
+ Lifespan is 5+ years.
Will it hurt?
The only time patients have ever complained of pain during a veneers procedure was:
+ When the Local Anaesthetic is injected (booo needles!)
+ When they sit for too long in the dental chair (it’s only normal to get a sore butt)
Will my teeth be shaved and look like Tic Tacs?
A very stereotypical concept that many people often conclude is that in order to get veneers, your teeth will have to be shaved into the shape of small fangs or tiny tic tacs. This is not the case. If your teeth are in the right position, minimal to no prep can be achieved. This means the treatment can be completely reversible with no damage done to your actual tooth. The only time extreme grinding will be required is if the patient refuses orthodontics to place the teeth in the right position before they move forward with veneers. We often advise patients to focus on addressing the alignment, prior to proceeding with veneers as this will ensure an optimal finish with the least amount of grinding. Informed consent is taken to guarantee that all our patients are fully aware of the procedure, prior to moving forward.
How long will they last?
As previously touched upon, Porcelain veneers, if looked after well, can have the lifespan of 15+ years. New technology porcelain are made to last a very VERY long time. What happens after 10-15+ years? With age, unfortunately our gums shrink. Because of the shrinkage, the margins begin to show along our gum line, revealing the outline of our veneers. Composite veneers, on the other hand, only last 5+ years. As they are made inside the mouth with a resin material, they can be prone to develop staining.
How do I maintain and look after my veneers?
An effective way to protect your veneers (both Porcelain and Composite), is to wear a night time splint. This will help ensure that you avoid chipping or breaking them if you happen to grind your teeth or lock your jaw as you sleep. Even if you know you don’t have bruxism, it will still be a good idea to wear one for extra precaution. It would also help if you:
+ Regularly see you dentist for 3 – 6 monthly check-up, cleans and polish.
+ Maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. This includes flossing, brushing and using an alcohol free mouthwash day and night.
+ Avoid bad habits such has biting your nails, chewing on pens, etc.
+ Try to bite on the side of your mouth instead of directly in front.
+ Steer away from having beverages/foods that can stain teeth
